BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity boys’ soccer team fell to Ellsworth 3-2 on Thursday, Sept. 17, bringing them to a 2-3 record for the season.

The Trojan boys fought hard, and Coach Tyler Frank was pleased with his team’s ability to come back from two goals against them to tie the game in the second half.

“We were able to play MDI soccer,” he said. “When that happens, it is a pleasure to watch.”

The Ellsworth Eagles quickly scored two goals with 30:19 left in the first half.

MDI’s first goal came 19:13 before the end of the half by Sam TeHennepe, with an assist from Rye Murray.

The MDI coach believes certain teams have winning formulas based on personnel and strategy.

Ellsworth and Washington Academy, he said, demonstrate similarity in defense and ways of approaching the game.

“I think we have seen it enough to now know how to adjust and put us in a better position to finish with a different outcome.”

The Trojan’s second goal, which tied the game 2-2, came from Joe Grubb, with an assist by Ryan Bender.

The Eagles scored the winning goal with 13:04 left in the second half.

MDI is set to host Presque Isle Sept. 29 at 4 p.m. and head to Foxcroft Academy Thursday, Oct. 1, for a 4 p.m. game.

“With some tough matches ahead, I think our fans will continue to see some great soccer,” added Frank. “Our best soccer of this season is ahead of us.”
