Opal Curless will play for Syracuse

MOUNT DESERT — Mount Desert Island High School senior soccer player Opal Curless signed her National Letter of Intent on Wednesday, Feb. 3. She will play soccer on an athletic scholarship at Syracuse University.

“She’s all around a great player,” MDI Coach May Dow said. “It was fun watching her play and grow. I wish her good luck, and I’m excited to see what she does next.”

The 5-foot-8 midfielder finished her high school soccer career with 85 goals, 28 of which she scored in her senior year on the Trojan team. Her skills helped lead them to the Class B North Regional tournament.

Last week, Curless also was named the Gatorade Maine Girl’s Soccer Player of the Year. She is the first from MDI High School to be chosen for the honor.

According to Dow, Curless is a player “you cannot leave unmarked in a game.” But even when she is marked by several players at a time, she creates opportunities for her teammates to score, she added. “She is a great team player,” said Dow. “It’s nice seeing her passion for the sport pay off.”

Curless also was selected to the Northern Maine State team and was recognized as the Class B Maine Soccer Coaches Player of the Year, as well as Maine’s All-New England and All-America player.

She is the daughter of Michael and Abigail Curless of Mount Desert.
