BAR HARBOR — New Mount Desert Island High School varsity boys’ soccer coach Tyler Frank is excited for the season, he said Monday before tryouts began.

Frank was born in Limestone, but grew up mostly in Colorado. His high school coach in Littleton, Colo., he said, was his inspiration for becoming a coach himself. “It was his level of expectation” that impressed him, he said. “It wasn’t so much spoken, it was just in action. His purposefulness and his love of the game were so clear. I think he just instilled that (soccer) was something that was important and worthwhile, that could help us in life.”

As a soccer player, Frank was part of the college team at Colorado State for a couple of years. “I also played on City League indoor teams” both in Colorado and here in Maine, he said. “My kids all play soccer.”

He has been playing soccer for 35 years and coaching for 10. Around here, he has coached the Sumner varsity boys’ team, Ellsworth Middle School JV boys’ team, and Ellsworth Travel Soccer Club team. He works as a project manager at the Jackson Laboratory.

“I am honored to be the 3rd MDI varsity boys soccer coach and look forward to working with (JV boys coach Brent Barker) to continue to build the program and have a competitive season,” he told parents in a statement. “My philosophy is work hard, play hard, enjoy the game. The key is to expand, improve and develop what giving 100 percent is.”

The team is set to travel to Hampden for a preseason play day Saturday. Games against Oceanside at 9:30 a.m., Nokomis at 11:30 a.m. and Dexter at 2:30 p.m. provide important practice competition. Their home opener is set for 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, against Brewer.

“Soccer is a lifestyle,” Frank said. “There are so many aspects about it: competition, teamwork, camaraderie. Representing your school, your family, your community.”

And yes, he avidly watched the World Cup this summer.
