ELLSWORTH — The Mount Desert Island boys’ soccer team earned its first win of the season last week but fell to a bitter rivalry defeat Tuesday.
MDI snapped a three-game losing streak Friday as it claimed a 3-0 home victory over Hermon. The Trojans then succumbed to a road loss as they fell 2-1 against Ellsworth in a rivalry showdown at Del Luce Stadium.
On Friday, MDI got in the win column for the first time this year thanks to a brace from Ieuan Howell and a tally from Cole Watson. Goalkeeper Quentin Pileggi kept a clean sheet in his first game back in net for the Trojans after missing the first three games with an injury.
Returning to action Tuesday for the first of two rivalry battles against Ellsworth, MDI got a goal from Cole Watson but could not overcome an energized Senior Night performance by the home team. The loss was just the second in the past 11 games against the Eagles for the Trojans, who are now 7-2-2 in the matchup since the start of the 2016 season.
Although Ellsworth controlled the game for the first 10 minutes, MDI (1-4) had the first real scoring opportunity with 26 minutes left in the first half when Henning Reinholdt directed a corner kick just wide of the post. The home team then took the lead with 12 minutes, 57 seconds remaining in the first half when Kai Barrett delivered a winding strike into the top-right corner.
Ellsworth (3-3-1) doubled its lead seven minutes after halftime after a mistake in the MDI back line freed up Silas Montigny, who slotted home for the second goal. The Trojans got one back with 15:34 to play when Watson bundled in a loose ball from close range, but it was not enough for the visitors as the Eagles held on for a one-goal victory.
MDI will host Foxcroft (3-1-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, and Presque Isle at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4. The Trojans will then play on the road against John Bapst at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6.
