BAR HARBOR — Ellsworth native May Dow has been named the new head varsity coach for the Mount Desert Island High School girls’ soccer team.

“I saw this as a big opportunity. Obviously, as a head coach, you have more responsibility. But you can also ask for more out of the girls,” said Dow, “I’m excited for the opportunity. It will be a challenge, but I’ve seen some of the girls play, and I got to meet a bunch at the meeting, so that’s exciting too.”

Dow boasts an impressive playing and coaching resume. She attended Ellsworth High School, where she played four years of soccer. She went on to play soccer for four years at Husson University.

“She is going to be a great addition to the coaching staff,” said MDI Athletic Director Bunky Dow (no relation). “I think from the turn-out at the first day of meetings that the girls are very excited too.”

May Dow got her coaching start at her alma mater, serving as the assistant soccer coach for seven years. She was also involved in the tennis and basketball programs.

She replaces Tom Savage, who decided to step down after several years in the position.

“I feel Tom did a great job getting the program back to where it is now,” Bunky Dow said.

He continued that the new coach is beginning with lots of positive energy. “We’re very fortunate to have her,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing her work with the girls, and I think it will be nice to have a woman in that position, as a female coach. I think she’s going to be really great for the program.”

Jennifer Richter, one of May Dow’s former players at Ellsworth, will join her staff as the new junior varsity coach.
