MDI 6 – PI 2

Saturday afternoon, the Lady Trojans defeated the top-seeded Presque Isle Wildcats 6-2 at home. Earlier in the season, the Wildcats handed MDI their first loss in a 2-1 game.

Both teams came out kicking from the start. Opal Curless and Darcy Kanu each scored a goal in the opening minutes of the game for a 2-0 lead. They were answered by goals from Wildcats Erin Ackerson and Taylor Williams for a 2-2 tie.

Curless scored another goal and Paige Mason scored with 23 minutes left in the first half. The score was 4-2, where it stayed for the rest of the half.

MDI defenders Emma Fernald, Molly Carroll, Rachel Jacobs, Abbe Miller and Katie Guarino stayed a step ahead of the quick, well-coordinated Wildcat attackers. Communication on the field has improved steadily and was key to this victory.

“Defenders don’t show up in the stats,” Coach Tom Fernald said, “but they marked these great players, and had to match their energy. Our passing and teamwork today was great. Everybody did really well at supporting each other.”

Curless made two more goals in the first ten minutes of the second half, bringing the score to 6-2. The first was on a solo cross, marked by one defender. The second was on a team assist.

Mason and Kanu made several more shots on assists by Guarino and Curless. Jacobs and Carroll intercepted passes and blocked shots to back up MDI goalie Keely McConomy. Twice, Carroll headed out P.I. shots on goal.

McConomy had timely saves at the end of the game to protect the MDI lead.

The Lady Trojans are set to host Old Town Thursday at 6 p.m., Hermon Saturday at 11 a.m. and Ellsworth Monday at 6 p.m. to close out the regular season.
