Girls’ soccer roundup



ELLSWORTH — The Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners have recorded wins in their first two outings, and the Sumner Tigers and George Stevens Academy Eagles each posted victories in the opening week of girls’ high school soccer action.

Old Town 4, Ellsworth 0

The Old Town Coyotes spoiled the season opener for the Ellsworth Eagles with a 4-0 shutout on Friday in Old Town.

Goalkeeper Kayla Madden held the Eagles scoreless and received offensive support from Rachel Martin, who scored twice, and Baylee Labree and Brittany Cousins, who each had a goal.

Bucksport 2, Searsport 2

Goals by Belle Cyr and Eliza Hosford were enough to give the Bucksport Golden Bucks a double overtime tie with the Searsport Vikings on Friday in Searsport.

Kaylee Knowles and Karigen Coffin each scored for the Vikings, who outshot Bucksport 18-5.

Brooklynn Alberts had one save for Searsport in goal, and Bree Coombs made 10 stops for the Golden Bucks.

Washington Academy 5, Sumner 1

The Sumner Tigers fell to the Washington Academy Raiders 5-1 on Friday in East Machias in the season opener for both teams.

Sumner’s lone goal was by Hannah Fleming.

Sophie Squire and Molly Sheehan each scored twice and Lucia Aretakis had a goal for the Raiders in the win.

Goalkeeper Jordan Merchant made 16 saves for the Tigers.

DI-Stonington 3, Narraguagus 1

The Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners opened their season on Friday in Harrington with a 3-1 win over the Narraguagus Knights.

Orono 5, GSA 0

The Orono Red Riots scored five goals on 20 shots as they rolled to a shutout of the George Stevens Academy Eagles in Friday’s season opener in Orono.

Madison Politte made eight saves in goal for the Eagles.

For Orono, Becky Lopez-Anido had a pair of goals and Brinsley Chasse, Daphne Murphy and Giorgia Calcagno each had single tallies.

Sumner 4, Narraguagus 0

The Sumner Tigers notched four goals, three of them in the first half, to down the Narraguagus Knights 4-0 on Monday in Harrington.

The win evened the Tigers’ record at 1-1.

DI-Stonington 4, Bangor Christian 3

An overtime goal by Allison Cormier, her second of the game, lifted the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners to a 3-2 win over the Bangor Christian Patriots on Monday in Bangor.

The Patriots had rallied from a 2-0 deficit after Holli Boyce scored the game’s opening goal and Cormier notched her first tally early in the second half.

Caitlyn Wallinga scored the first Patriot goal on a penalty kick and Lexie Thompson knotted the score.

Morgan Shepard put the Mariners back in front, but Kate Jones scored for the Patriots to re-tie the game and force the overtime.

Allyson Eaton and Logan Eaton combined in goal for 11 saves on 15 shots for the 2-0 Mariners, and Sierra McDonald made eight stops for the Patriots.

GSA 2, Bucksport 1

The GSA Eagles evened their record at 1-1 on Monday, edging the Bucksport Golden Bucks 2-1 in Bucksport.

Alice Dillon scored the first of two second-half goals for GSA, with Lindsay Nevin giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Eliza Hosford scored the lone goal for the 0-1-1 Bucks on a penalty kick late in the second half.
