BAR HARBOR — This year’s junior varsity boys soccer team at Mount Desert Island High School enjoyed the kind of games and the kind of season that keep players on their toes and drive them to improve. Their season record of six wins, five losses and four ties indicates both the strong competition in the league and how close many games were.
“It was good because we had to learn to compete,” Coach Brent Barker said. For six games in a row, he said, the score was tied at the end of regulation time. Two of those games stayed as ties, two were wins for MDI and two were losses. “We learned a lot, having those close games. You learn so much more than you do in a blowout.”
Two of the team’s five losses were by only one goal. The other three were losses by two goals. “We were disappointed,” Barker said, but the losses were motivating. “We always wanted redemption, kind of wanted to see the other team again the next day.”
One chance for redemption came with rival Presque Isle. Early in the season MDI lost to the Wildcats 3-0 on the road, but at their second meeting it was a tie.
“They came every day wanting to compete,” Barker said. “That was a lot of fun.”
Andrew Jewitt played goalkeeper for most games. “He did a good job and learned a lot. His confidence improved dramatically over the season,” Barker said. “We had a lot of kids who could play different positions. It was a hard working group. They got along very well. A lot of these kids will be driven to work on their skills and stay involved in the program.”
A JV tournament was scheduled for the end of the season but was cancelled because not enough teams were available to play.
Team members included sophomores Dylan Johnson, Kai Fox, Griffin Costello-Sanders, Alex Galeaz, Avery LaValle, Zach Galeaz, Fischer Brown, Sam TeHennepe, Andrew Jewett and Dana Borge and freshmen Griffin Maristany, Jose Chumbe, Jack Stroud, Matt Staples, Dmitry Lyakhovich, Simon Davis, Owen Mild, Hayden Goodwin, Nick Stanley, Alden Fournier and manager Sam McLelland.
