Trojans compete at golf states
VASSALBORO — The Mount Desert Island golf team closed out the 2021 season with Friday’s Class B championships.
MDI tied for eighth in the 10-team state championship meet at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro. With the Trojans qualifying as a team, six golfers from the school got to compete in the year-end meet.
Emily Carter, the Penobscot Valley Conference Girls’ Player of the Year, competed in a challenging girls’ field that included Leavitt trio Jade and Ruby Haylock and Alexis McCormick. Carter finished with an 18-hole score of 92 to place fourth and finish as the top Northern Maine golfer.
In the boys’ field, Shepperd Brown led the way for MDI with a score of 90. Also competing for the Trojans in the boys’ field were Caden Braun (96), Joey Wellman-Clouse (105), Jameson Weir (109) and Kasch Warner (117).
As a team, MDI posted a gross score of 383 to beat out Presque Isle (388) and Cony (393) for eighth place. The Trojans were competing in the state championships for the fifth consecutive season.
Eli Spaulding of Freeport won the individual boys’ championship with a four-under score of 68, and Jade Haylock claimed the girls’ crown with an 11-over 83. Yarmouth (322) beat out Leavitt (338) to win the team title.
MDI volleyball team drops 3 straight
BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island volleyball team fell to .500 on the season with losses in its past three matches.
MDI played strong matches against Washington Academy and George Stevens Academy last week but was defeated in both contests. Facing Narraguagus on Tuesday, the Trojans dropped a tight match to fall to 6-6.
Last Thursday, MDI traveled to East Machias for a showdown with undefeated Washington Academy. The Trojans became just the second team to win a set against the Raiders this year in a 3-1 loss.
On Friday, MDI, the only team to have defeated GSA this season, hosted the Eagles in a rematch in Bar Harbor. The Trojans won the first two games but could not hold off the powerhouse visitors, who rallied for a 3-2 win.
Facing Narraguagus on Tuesday in its final regular season home match, MDI suffered another agonizingly close defeat. The Trojans dominated the first set but dropped three of the next four to the visiting Knights (7-5) in a 25-8, 19-25, 23-25, 25-19, 10-15 defeat.
MDI will play on the road against Hampden Academy (8-4) at 6 p.m. today, Oct. 14. The Trojans will then close out the regular season at Ellsworth (6-7) at that time Tuesday, Oct. 19.
