Athlete of the Week: Jesse Lower
The Mount Desert Island boys’ swim team took second place in Monday’s state championship meet, and senior Jesse Lower was a major reason for the Trojans’ success. Lower placed second for MDI in both the 100-yard individual medley (1 minute, 58.59 seconds) and 100-yard breaststroke (58.27 seconds). He also swam on MDI’s 200-yard medley relay (1:42.39) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:33.44) teams, both of which also took second place.
MDI boys’ basketball season ends in Round of 16
DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Mount Desert Island boys’ basketball team’s 2021-22 season came to an end last Wednesday in tournament play.
MDI suffered a 49-35 loss to Foxcroft in last week’s Round of 16 game at Foxcroft Academy. The Trojans held a 23-16 lead at halftime but could not hang on as the host team secured a place at the Cross Insurance Center.
Charlie Parker led the way in scoring for MDI with nine points. The Trojans also got seven points from Joey Minutolo, six points from Alex Gray, five from Spencer Laurendeau, three from A.J. Lozano, two each from Evan Ankrom and John Bennett and one from Jack Hodgdon.
The loss brought an end to a challenging year for MDI, which failed to advance to the Cross Insurance Center for the first time since the tournament moved to the new building in 2014. Yet in a letter to the MDI basketball community, head coach Justin Norwood told fans that the 2021-22 team is one they should be proud of.
“We talk to the kids all the time about ‘leaving your jersey in a better place,’ the idea being that each team will add to or uphold the expectations of our program,” Norwood said. “There is no question in my mind that this team did just that. From now until the day I am done coaching, I will reference this team to all teams that follow because they are a true example of what I believe our athletic program, school and Island community wants in a basketball team.”
