Saltysiak named to MTCCCA All-Star team

BAR HARBOR — Mount Desert Island’s Ponce Saltysiak was selected last Wednesday to the Maine Track and Cross-Country Coaches Association All-Star team.

Saltysiak, a senior, was the MDI boys’ team’s top runner in all five meets this season. He placed first overall in regular season meets at Searsport and Ellsworth as well as in the Hancock County championships.



MDI to launch esports program

BAR HARBOR — Mount Desert Island High School is set to add esports to its list of athletic offerings.

The gaming program is set to launch in the coming spring season. The program plans to compete in FIFA 21, Madden 21, Rocket League, SMITE, League of Legends and Super Smash Bros. this year. The team will compete remotely during its first season.

The Maine Principals’ Association began offering winter esports this fall. Twelve schools competed in the inaugural season.

Those interested are asked to complete a survey online at Coach Mark Arnold will then schedule a follow-up meeting with prospective competitors.


AYS youth basketball clinics to begin this week

ELLSWORTH — Acadian Youth Sports is set to begin its annual youth basketball clinics starting Friday, Dec. 11, at the Down East Family YMCA in Ellsworth.

The clinics will begin tomorrow with 7-8 girls from 6-7:15 p.m. Clinics over the weekend include 2-4 girls (9:15-10:45 a.m.), 7-8 boys (12:15-1:30 p.m.) Saturday, Dec. 12, and 7-8 girls (8-9 a.m.), 7-8 boys (9-10 a.m.), 5-6 girls (10-11 a.m.), 5-6 boys (11 a.m.-noon), 2-4 girls (noon-1 p.m.) and 2-4 boys (1-2 p.m.).

Clinics resume next week with 2-4 boys from 4-5:15 p.m. and 5-6 boys from 6:45-7:45 p.m. They will conclude Tuesday, Dec. 15, with 5-6 girls from 6:15-7:30 p.m.).

All players must check in at the front desk for a temperature screening prior to participating. Players must wear face coverings at all time unless hydrating via their own labeled water bottles.
