Turkey Trot attracts 100

BAR HARBOR — For participants of the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, the day began not by putting a turkey in the oven or baking a delectable pumpkin pie but by sprinting around downtown Bar Harbor.

The second edition of the 5K race sponsored by Cadillac Mountain Sports and the MDI YMCA drew more than 100 runners of ages ranging from 5 to 69 years.

Peter Keeney won the 3.1-mile run in 20 minutes, 45 seconds, followed by Andrew Tiemann, who crossed the finish line in 21:09.

Kate Joseph was the first female finisher, in 22 minutes, 34 seconds, followed by Laureen Libby with a time of 22:57.

Several friends and family members of the participants stepped in at the finish line to assist the seven volunteers at the race. “It’s a holiday, so it’s really hard to get volunteers, and it was great to see people who are just around to step in and help out,” race director Becky Carroll said. “I love it when that happens.”

A post-race party was organized by the YMCA. Carroll prepared a turkey, cranberry sauce and pies. “It was a great race, we had better weather than last year,” said Carroll. She credits that as the reason for some 30 race-day registrations. The inaugural race had 44 participants.
