MOUNT DESERT — The second annual Autism Awareness Walk and 5K Run, held May 2 in Northeast Harbor, raised $6,000 for the Autism Society of Maine with support from individuals and businesses.
Christopher Heel created the first year’s event as part of his Senior Exhibition project at Mount Desert Island High School in 2014. This event raised over $3,000 for the Autism Society of Maine, so he immediately began planning this year’s event and added a 5K run in addition to the walk with the goal of doubling last year’s total.
“We could not have put on such an event without the help of many volunteers,” Chris’ mom Susan said. “We would like to thank Dan Stillman of MDIHS for his amazing puzzle piece signs and to Marty Lyons of MDIHS for helping arrange an awesome group of volunteers. This was truly a community event, and Chris has already begun plans on next year’s event.”
