Niggemann wins Frosty 5K

MOUNT DESERT — An unseasonably warm December morning greeted the participants of Saturday’s third annual Frosty 5K and Fun Run hosted by the Neighborhood House.

Philipp Niggemann of Bar Harbor was first to run to the bright green garland at the finish line, winning with a time of 18 minutes and 36 seconds. Laura Anderson was the women’s champion with a time of 22:41.

Robin Emery, 69, of Lamoine runs down Main Street in Northeast Harbor toward the finish line of the Frosty 5K race. The annual event is hosted by the Neighborhood House.

Blue snowflakes marked the starting line, and cut-outs of Frosty the Snowman indicated the mile markers for the more than 60 runners who hit the road for the annual race.

“It’s just a fun community event,” Neighborhood House program and volunteer director Susie James said. “It’s a fun thing to do in the spirit of the holidays to kick off the festival season in Northeast Harbor.”

A raffle and award ceremony was held at the Neighborhood House following the race where runners indulged themselves in hot cocoa and doughnuts.

“This was the best [Frosty 5K race] so far,” added James, crediting the beautiful day and the volunteers for the successful event. The inaugural road race was held in frigid, below freezing temperature. Last year saw a steady pouring of sleet. “This year we finally had nice weather. I think everyone had fun.”
