Course record falls at MDI Marathon

BAR HARBOR—Michael Crouch of Chicopee, Mass., smashed the Mount Desert Island Marathon course record on a cold and windy fall morning Sunday with a winning time of 2 hours, 26 minutes, 55 seconds. The previous record of 2:30:41 was set by Louis Luchini in 2012.

Leah Frost of Glover, Vt., was the women’s winner with 2:49:44. Even though she missed the course record by just 30 seconds, she improved on her own time of 2:53:05 as she fought strong winds on the island’s scenic route.

“It’s not an easy course, but it’s beautiful,” she said after the race. “So it’s really rewarding.”

Matt Homich of Ellsworth was first among Hancock County runners to cross the finish line. He was fourth overall with a time of 2:38:09.

The first resident of MDI to finish the race was Brendan O’Keefe of Seal Cove in a time of 2:55:11.

The event, organized by Crow Athletics, also included a half-marathon, relays and a kids’ run event. Participants in the kids program each ran at least 25 miles over spring, summer and early fall, and ran the last mile together on race day. They began at 9:15 a.m., finished on the official finish line and earned T-shirts and finisher medals

Brian Harvey of Boston, Mass., and Laura Caplan of Cambridge, Mass., set course records in the half-marathon, running 1:07:45 and 1:30:38 respectively. Hundreds of volunteers and many more community members lined the course to entertain and cheer on the runners as they passed, offering encouragement and water.

Keating Pepper was the first MDI resident to finish the half with 1:36:25.

The Maine Warden Service successfully defended their title in the public safety relay. The three-person team called “Chafing the Dream” won the relay overall with a time of 2:48:03.
