Down East runners strong at Sugarloaf



KINGFIELD — Many Hancock County runners competed in the 33rd annual Sugarloaf Marathon on Sunday, led by Andrew Kephart of Ellsworth, who finished 18th overall in a field of about 600 with his time of 3:02.04.

The course runs along Route 27 from Eustis through the Carrabassett Valley.

Joshua Torrance of Ellsworth finished in 3:44.57. Kassie Strout of Trenton was 15th in her division with 3:40.18.

Petr Simicek led the Bar Harbor pack with his time of 3:44.14. Shira Catlin had a time of 3:46.19 and Kara Pratt 5:01.01.

From Southwest Harbor, Jonathan Hogue finished with a time of 3:47.04 and Rebeccah Geib with 3:59.18.

Gary Allen of Great Cranberry Island, who has run the Sugarloaf Marathon 15 times, was the guest speaker at the Saturday night dinner before the race. He also won his age division with a 3:10.21 finish.

A 15K race was held on the second half of the marathon course. Sarah Gilbert of Bar Harbor, Matt Ingrisano of Southwest Harbor, Hannah Whalen of Bernard and Alison King of Trenton completed the 15K.
