PRESQUE ISLE — The Mount Desert Island golf team is headed to the state golf championships after solid showings in Monday’s Penobscot Valley Conference championship meet.
MDI shot 349 as a team to finish as runner-up to PVC champion Hermon, which posted a gross score of 343. The Trojans also had an individual standout chosen as PVC Class B Girls’ Player of the Year.
Emily Carter and Kasch Warner posted joint team-best scores of 85 for MDI in the meet. Shepperd Brown was right behind the duo with a score of 86 for the Trojans, who also got scores of 93 from Caden Braun, 100 from Jameson Weir, 104 from Joey Wellman-Clouse and 111 from Carlina Leonardi.
The state championship qualification continues a stretch of successful seasons for MDI golf in recent years. The Trojans were PVC runners-up in 2017, PVC champions and state runners-up in 2018 and PVC third-place finishers in 2019 and 2020.
Individually, Carter, the girls’ medalist in the meet, was also announced Monday as the conference’s Girls’ Player of the Year. An MDI golfer has now won that award in four of the past five seasons after Gabbie James received the honor three straight years for the Trojans from 2017-19.
Prior to Monday’s PVC meet, MDI had posted a score of 176 to beat John Bapst (207) and Ellsworth (220) in last Wednesday’s regular season finale at Kebo Valley Golf Club. Brown led the way with a nine-hole score of 40 for the Trojans, who got scores of 45 from Carter and Weir, 46 from Braun, 48 from Warner, 50 from Leonardi and 53 from Wellman-Clouse.
The Class B championships will be held next Friday, Oct. 8, at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro. The event is scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m.
