Golf team third in PVCs

LINCOLN — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity golf team placed third in the PVC Championship meet at Jato Oct. 2 and tenth in the state team championship match Saturday at Natanis in Vassalboro for Class B.

Qualifying for states was a team goal for the season, coach Wilt Jones said. “It was great for the seniors to be there and good experience for the younger kids. We shot a 374 at PVCs and 384 at states. That’s a respectable score.

“The kids did a great job and had great attitudes. Of course they always want to do better. There are some very strong teams out there; it’s always a challenge.”

Two Trojans qualified for the individual state competition set for Saturday, Oct. 18, also at Natanis. Junior Kyle Lamson shot an 88 at the team match. Senior Jordan Hodgdon shot 94.

Also competing in the team match were sophomore Riley Swanson, with 101; senior Jake Boumil, 102 and sophomore Aaron Snurkowski, 104.

The MDI golf team won the PVC Championship in 2012 and competed at states, but did not qualify for states last year.
