BELFAST — Pulling ahead of Ellsworth’s Haley Lawrence as they climbed the hill in the final stretch of the race, Mount Desert Island High School senior Caroline Driscoll took third place in the Class B State Championship cross-country meet Saturday.
Driscoll knocked more than twenty seconds off her Eatern Maine runner-up time from last week. She ran the 5K with a time of 19:41.41 despite the persistent cold rain and wind on the course.
In team scores, the MDI girls finished fourth with 129 points. Greely was this year’s state champion with the top two finishers and 59 points. Yarmouth was second with 64 and Cape Elizabeth was third with 84. The girls’ field included 107 runners on 14 teams.
MDI senior Waylon Henggeler was 15th with a time of 20:20.84, followed by sophomore Lydia Dacorte, 28th in 21:09.37; sophomore Emma Strong, 44th in 21:42.45; freshman India Janes, 55th in 22:06.65; senior Sydney Wright, 75th in 23:10.02 and junior Xingyao Chen, 88th in 24:08.71.
The MDI boys finished ninth in a field of 15 teams with 236 points. Freeport won the team competition on the boys side with 57 points, followed by York and Cape Elizabeth.
Senior Jordan Harris led the pack for the MDI boys, many of whom shaved seconds off their Eastern Maine meet times, finishing 33rd with a time of 17:56.83. He was followed by senior Ralph Magnani, 48th in 18:15.50; junior Dylan Harris, 59th in 18:34.44; junior Peter Philbrook, 67th in 18:48.53; senior David Anderson, 72nd in 19:02.07; senior Ethan Craigo, 73rd in 19:06.42 and sophomore Josh Bloom, 89th in 19:41.38
