Cross country runners-up

ORONO — The Mount Desert Island High School girls’ and boys’ cross-country teams were runners-up Friday, Sept. 18, in a cross-country meet at Orono High School.

The girls scored 57 points, while the boys were at 59 in the 2.76-mile run. Orono won with a total of 15 points each for both their teams.

“The workouts that the team have been doing have helped them become more efficient and stronger racers and runners,” MDI Coach Desiree Sirois said.

“We are close to the midpoint of the season, and the positive effects of training are becoming apparent in races.”

According to Sirois, athletes focused on progressive consistency, negative splits, pack running and sprinting the final sections of the race.

Emma Strong stood ninth overall and finished first among Trojan girls with a time of 21:16.89.

Junior Peter Philbrook was first among MDI boys to cross the finish line, with a time of 17:32.48, and finished eight overall.

“Both the boys’ and girls’ team were lead by a strong lead and mid-pack, assisted by solid effort throughout the racing contingent,” said Sirois.

The teams head to Old Town High School on Saturday, Sept. 26, where the coach said the team is looking forward to challenging themselves.
