Trojan cheering fifth at PVCs

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School cheering squad finished fifth of eight Saturday when they hosted the PVC Championship meet.

With 102.4 points, the Trojans were behind Hermon with 138.7, Ellsworth with 131.9, John Bapst with 118.1 and Presque Isle with 110.1.

MDI came in ahead of Old Town, Caribou and Foxcroft Academy.

The event consists of a penalty/warm-up round, where each team walks through their routine and judges determine whether the stunts are legal, followed by a final round.

The Trojan squad this year chose “Ready for a Fight” for their theme, part of one of their chants. Their routine was more challenging than in previous years, which they were able to attempt thanks to a larger and more experienced group.

“They did really well,” Coach Katie Leighton said. Performing the routine to a packed house at the Friday night girls’ basketball game vs. Hermon “really built their confidence,” she said.

A younger group of cheerleaders from the MDI YMCA, coached by Alex Whitmore, came out to the meet to support the high schoolers. They brought their pom-poms and broke out in a short “We are proud of you!” chant after the MDI performance.

Leighton said they look forward to upcoming competitions. “Today we did way better than last week at the Big East meet. Other teams had already competed before that this season, but it was the first for us.”

The 2014-2015 MDI squad includes Katelyn Burns, Valeria Chiri, Hannah Carroll, Claire Elk, Genevieve Gobel, Ali Goodwin, Ashley McEachern, Mackenzie Myers, Robin Nicholson, Natalie Klaver, McKenzie Young, Karli Dyer, Taylor McVicar, Hailey Saunders, Madison Thornton, Tuva Vik and Danielle White. Katie Leighton and Taylor Fernald are the coaches.

The team heads next to the Cross Center in Bangor for the regional and state competitions.
