YMCA to host Challenge

BAR HARBOR — The inaugural Dick Abbott Basketball Skills Challenge is set for Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Mount Desert Island YMCA. The event includes a dunk contest, 3-point contest, free throw contest and a skills challenge similar to the NBA All-Star Weekend.

A fundraiser for the Josh Sprague Memorial Fund, the competition honors Dick Abbott, a longtime member of the YMCA.

The grade school and high school girls’ and boys’ divisions begin the contest at 9 a.m. with the finals set to end at 3 p.m. Cost of participation is $5 per event and $15 for all four. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the first 70 participants receiving free T-shirts.

Abbott, 79, plays full court basketball with men ranging from 20- to 60-years-old three times each week. “His love of the game and his dedication to exercise and healthy living is a testament to what good choices are all about,” said Steve Parady, a volunteer of the Josh Sprague Memorial Scholarship Fund Committee, which helped organize the event.

Spectators are welcome. Admission is $2 for students and $4 for adults.
