Sprague tourney set

BAR HARBOR — The annual Josh Sprague Memorial Basketball Tournament and Dick Abbott 3-point/foul shot contest are set for Thursday, March 3, and Friday, March 4, at the Mount Desert Island YMCA.

The event honors both the late Josh Sprague of Bar Harbor by playing the game he loved in a place he loved and Dick Abbott, a longtime member of the YMCA.

Now in its 15th year, the tournament is sponsored by The First. Grade-school and high-school divisions will compete on March 3 from 4-6:30 p.m., and the adult division will compete on March 4 from 6 p.m. until close. Participants may sign up individually for $20 per person. All tournament proceeds benefit youth sports on MDI.

Last year’s event raised a total of $1,475 for the Josh Sprague Scholarship Fund at the MDI YMCA.

Those funds helped individuals with memberships at the Y, purchased jerseys for the Y’s travel basketball teams and paid for padding for the backboards in the gym.

“The goal is to be financially solvent and grow resources to expand services and opportunities the YMCA deems worthy,” said Josh’s Dad, Stephen Sprague.

The kids’ tournament was coed in each age division last year. High School winners were Gus Reeves, Graham Good, Russell Kropff and Billy Kerley. For 7th-8th grade, Drew Shea, Derek Collin, Kyle Nicholson and Eli Parady came out on top. Brady Renault, A.J. Lazano, Alex Fernald and Tucker James were the 5th-6th grade champions.

The first 100 participants to sign up will receive a free T-shirt. Registration forms can be obtained at the YMCA or online at mdiymca.org. For more information, contact the MDI YMCA at 288-3511 or [email protected]
