BANGOR — Three-point field goals from Aaron Snurkowski and Andrew Phelps in the final seconds weren’t enough for the Mount Desert Island High School boys’ varsity team to overcome the lead the Red Riots of Orono had built up Saturday at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. MDI fell 61-50 in the Class B North quarterfinals.
Orono kept a steady full court defense to put the fifth seeded Trojans away, ending their season with a record of 15-5.
“It was a tough match,” said MDI Coach Justin Norwood, the way tournament games are. “They [Orono Red Riots] are a lot bigger than we are, and there was a difference in rebounding. We couldn’t catch up to them in the second half.”
The Trojans leapt to an early lead with a 3-pointer from Riley Swanson just seconds into the game. Building on that lead was Russell Kropff with a layup and Devin Parlatore with a field goal. Three minutes into the quarter, MDI was up 5-2.
The Red Riots quickly fought back, trailing two points behind. They then evened the score at 10-10 going into the final minute. A layup at the sound of the buzzer from Phelps helped the Trojans to pull ahead to 12-10 going into the second quarter.
Orono took their first lead two minutes into the next period on a free-throw conversion by forward Keenan Collett. MDI’s Isaiah Keene snatched it back with a layup.
The lead swapping between the teams ended with three minutes left in the half when Snurkowski sank a 3-pointer to take MDI up 24-21.
Orono’s junior forward Jake Koffman replied with a jump shot. But the Trojan boys managed to enter halftime with a narrow lead of 29-26.
The Hawks came roaring into the next half, adding 15 points in the third period to just six for MDI to take a lead and enter the final period 42-35.
The Red Riots kept their momentum going. But on shouts of “let’s go green,” the Trojan boys fought back to trail just three points behind at 48-45 midway through the last quarter.
MDI added 15 points in the period, but wasn’t able to match the full court pressure of the Red Riots
Free-throw conversions in the final seconds helped Orono put away the game with a 61-50 victory.
Swanson led the Trojan boys in scoring with 11 points. Snurkowski added nine, and Phelps netted eight.
MDI players were 6-for-15 from the free-throw line.
The 2015-16 varsity boys’ team included sophomores Andrew Phelps and Colby Lee, juniors Gus Reeves, Drew Rich, Graham Good, Aaron Snurkowski, Russell Kropff, Riley Swanson, Devin Parlatore and Mac Shea, and seniors Kaleb Payson and Isaiah Keene. Matthew Lambert is the team manager.
