BANGOR — With a 62-44 victory over John Bapst Saturday at the Cross Center, the Mount Desert Island High School girls’ basketball team logged a perfect 18-0 record in the regular season – the first in program history.

It was a whirlwind week, with weather forcing the last three games into just four days. Kelsey Shaw and Sierra Tapley were named Big East Co-Players of the Week.

Against Bapst Saturday, the strain of the schedule began to show as the Lady Trojan defense suffered. Bapst outscored MDI in the second and fourth quarters.

In the first half, Sarah Phelps sank two three-pointers, and Tapley and Sara Norberg each hit one. The score at the half was 34-23, MDI leading. The Trojans increased their lead in the third to a more comfortable 49-27. Cassidy Parady and Maya Watras contributed field goals in the fourth, the first in the season from Watras.

Tapley led the scoring against Bapst with 23 points, and Darcy Kanu had 10 points and 7 steals.

MDI 90 – GSA 46

At George Stevens Friday, Tapley paced the team with 19 points and 5 assists. Shaw poured in 17 points and had 7 rebounds, 8 steals and 6 assists. Kanu had 6 rebounds and 4 steals.

MDI 59 – Ellsworth 25

The Wednesday, Feb. 4 game against Ellsworth was senior night for the girls’ basketball, swimming and diving, track and band programs. Basketball seniors Ali Bierman, Molly Carroll, Haley Littlefield, Norberg and Phelps were honored along with their parents.

Bierman took the tip-off, which was controlled by Ellsworth. Tapley led off the field goals with a three. Littlefield sank a long two-pointer. Kanu pulled down an offensive rebound and sank her own shot. Tapley added two steals in the second quarter as the Lady Trojans extended their lead. Carroll sank a two from the far right, and Shaw added three two-pointers, one on a coast-to-coast drive. MDI led at the half 34-17.

In the third quarter, Carroll dominated on the boards and added four points. The fourth quarter was low-scoring on both sides, and MDI got into some foul trouble, but they defended their lead to win the game 59-25.

Tapley had a game-high 23 points, 6 steals and 6 assists. Shaw added 18 points and 14 rebounds. Carroll had 7 rebounds and 6 points.

“This was a game where I knew they [Ellsworth] were going to come out pretty hard,” Coach Brent Barker said. “We always have that target on our backs. It was also an emotional night, senior night and the ceremony for Jamie Gonzales. I thought the kids responded well. I liked the effort, and I thought we got good contributions from everybody.

“Our kids are quite good and getting better every day.”

As they are top ranked in the league, the Lady Trojans receive a bye in tournament preliminaries. They are set to play at Bangor’s Cross Center at the Eastern Maine quarterfinals Saturday at 3:05 p.m.
