BAR HARBOR — Sophomore Riley Swanson paced the Mount Desert Island High School varsity boys’ basketball team in scoring in both their Thanksgiving Tip-Off tournament exhibition games Saturday.

The Trojans took on Medomak Valley in their first game of the day, with Medomak besting MDI 69-50. The first quarter of the game was the closest, with MDI closing the deficit they built early before Medomak Valley pulled ahead again to end the quarter 18-13.

In the second and third quarters, Medomak Valley doubled up MDI, scoring 45 to the Trojans’ 22. MDI came back for a solid fourth quarter with 15 points, but it wasn’t enough to dig out of the hole.

Swanson had 12 points including 2 three-pointers, Aaron Boumil had 8, and Graham Good had 7. James O’Donnell and Colby Lee each added 6. MDI was 4 for 13 from the free throw line.

After a break for the Ellsworth/Medomak Valley game, the Trojans came back to meet Fryeburg Academy. FA was another tough opponent, but the Trojan boys managed to learn some lessons from earlier in the day. The MDI defense improved, allowing 11 fewer points and staying within 10 points of their opponents for most of the game. Gus Reeves was a leader in defense. O’Donnell and Good both pulled down lots of rebounds.

Swanson had 18 points in the game including 4 threes. Aaron Snurkowski had 8. Reeves and Russell Kropff each added 4 points. MDI improved to 10 for 19 from the free throw line.

“I thought we did a pretty good job with our full court pressure and our full court offense,” Coach Justin Norwood said. “Defensively we need to get better in the half court, and offensively we need to do a better job moving the ball from side to side. Our main focus has been to improve every day.”

The regular season begins Saturday in Old Town as the MDI boys take on the defending Class B state champions at 7 p.m.
