MDI’s Barker named coach of year

Coach Brent Barker

BAR HARBOR — Coach Brent Barker earned top honors for the Mount Desert Island High School athletics program at the helm of the girls’ varsity basketball team.

For the second year running, he was voted coach of the year and his team won the sportsmanship award designated in the 2012-2013 Big East All Conference.

Coaches and athletic directors choose the recipients of the awards.

“Brent does an outstanding job for us,” said Bunky Dow, director of the MDI High School athletics department. “His teams are always very well prepared – they know their roles. It is a testament to him and his teams.”

Coach Barker received the coaching award three out of the last four years and his team won the sportsmanship award last year as well.

Trojan Hannah Shaw was named co-player of the year along with Chandler Guerette from Presque Isle High School. Shaw was also selected for the All Conference first team.

MDI player Emily Lewis received an honorable mention and received the Paul Soucy Spirit Award. Abbey Jewett was selected as a “scholar athlete”; and Molly Carroll received a defensive award.

MDI’s Ben Walls was named to the boys’ first all conference team.

Trojan Jon Phelps made the second all conference team; Keegan McKim was chosen as a scholar athlete; Andrew Dalton received a Paul Soucy Spirit Award for the boys; and Abe Philbrook was given a defensive award.
