MDI High Girls Beat Hermon

HERMON ― The Mount Desert Island High School girls’ basketball team improved its record to 8-1 after defeating opponent Hermon High School in an away game on Tuesday evening.

While scoring for both teams slowed in the third quarter, MDI picked up the pace again in the final eight minutes with just about everyone on the team bagging points to win the match-up 55-27.

Earlier in the week the Lady Trojans easily outplayed the Golden Bucks from Bucksport High School. Despite a quiet home crowd, MDI players had the game in the basket by the end of the first quarter, scoring 16 unanswered points before entering the second quarter up 26-9.

Patient MDI players capitalized on a stagnant Bucksport defense, threading low passes inside the paint to elevate their lead with textbook offense. The scoreboard showed MDI up 42-14 by the time the halftime buzzer sounded.

In the last quarter the Trojans retained some of their energy from the first half of their game, demonstrating the decisive passing their coach had emphasized earlier in the season. They vastly outscored the Golden Bucks resulting in a final tally of 69-32.

Hannah Shaw led MDI in scoring with 22 points. Other players who scored included Sierra Myrick, Sarah Phelps, Bailey Burr, Shelby O’Neil, Emily Lewis, Meghan Catanese, Sierra Tapley, Sara Norberg, and Kelsey Shaw.

The Lady Trojans are next scheduled to play against Old Town High School on Jan. 14, at home and away against perennial rival Ellsworth High School on Jan. 18.
