BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School boys basketball team continued its juggernaut this week, beating perennial rival Ellsworth and winning Monday afternoon in a nailbiter against Dover Foxcroft.
The Trojans had fallen behind in the first quarter due to the aggressive drives and three-point shooting of Foxcroft player Ryan Rebar, who scored 17 of his team’s points. (Foxcroft player Hunter Smith scored 16.)
With their coach’s vocal encouragement from the sideline, the Trojans recovered to trail by just one point at halftime. MDI player Andrew Davis, who put away seven of his nine points in the second quarter, led his team’s recovery. The halftime score was 26-27.
By the end of the third quarter, the Trojans had rebounded to lead 44-35, an improvement that resulted from higher-pressure defense as much as cleaner passing and more accurate shooting.
In the fourth quarter, however, Foxcroft players nearly took control, reducing the Trojan lead to 54-53. With less than 5 seconds remaining, MDI’s Abe Philbrook recovered two points at the free throw line following a technical foul called against Foxcroft player Kaleb Smith.
That increased the MDI lead to 56-53 but gave Foxcroft possession following the rebound. MDI improved its record to 11-2 and is now seeded fifth in Class B basketball.
Foxcroft’s record falls to 4-10.
Earlier in the week, MDI faced rival Ellsworth High School at home on Jan.18.
MDI developed a lead of seven points early in the first quarter and continued to lead 23-13 at halftime. Ellsworth recovered to trail by just seven points in the third quarter, but would stay behind the remainder of the game for a final score of 57-45, MDI on top.
The MDI boys are scheduled to play Presque Isle High School Jan. 25 and Caribou High School Jan 26, both at home.
