BANGOR — With a 56-47 defeat in a hard-fought game Friday night, the Mount Desert Island High School girls are state runners-up in Class B basketball. For their opponents, Lake Region High School, the state title is the first since 1975, despite winning the Western Maine Championship six times since 2006.

The Lady Trojans cut an early Lake Region lead to two, 23-21, by the end of the first half, but were outscored 33-26 in the second half. MDI was paced by senior Hannah Shaw with 13 points. Sarah Phelps added 11, Sierra Tapley had 8, and senior captain Sierra Myrick had 6, from two three-point field goals.
