BAR HARBOR — After defeating rival Ellsworth High School on Jan. 18 and easily outplaying Foxcroft Academy on Jan. 21, the Mount Desert Island High School girls’ varsity basketball team improved its record to 11-1.

Ellsworth had a record of 7-3 before playing MDI; Foxcroft had yet to win a game.

The final score of the home game was 78-35.

Earlier in the week, the Trojans traveled to Ellsworth to beat their traditional rival. MDI developed an early lead, which slowly grew in the first half of the game from 11-7 at the end of the first quarter to 18-13 at the end of the second.

Ellsworth recovered somewhat in the third quarter, reducing the Trojans’ lead to just four points for a short period, with Ellsworth player Hailee Langley scoring six points for her team. Langley led her team with 12 points scored that game.

The last quarter, however, MDI recovered to rack up 24 points (compared to 11 by Ellsworth), giving a final score of 56-39 and placing MDI sixth in Heal Points in Maine Class B basketball.

The MDI girls were scheduled to play against the top seeded team Presque Isle on Jan. 25, at home and Caribou the following day, also at home. Presque Isle is the only team to beat the MDI girls this season. “We’re confident we can give them a good match,” coach Barker said.
