BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School boys’ varsity basketball team sent the Old Town Coyotes scampering during its last home game of the regular season on Jan. 30, beating them 55-44.
MDI took an early lead against the Coyotes, finishing the first quarter with a nine-point lead during the senior night game.
“The group of seniors that started set the tone right away,” said Trojan head coach Justin Norwood. His team pulled ahead on a scoring spree midway through the first quarter, with MDI players making nine consecutive points to lead 15-6.
Coach Norwood attributed MDI’s resilience to “just playing like ourselves and taking good shots.”
With the loss, the Coyotes’ record fell to 9-7. MDI’s record improved to 13-3. Since the victory, the Trojans have hovered at the top of heal point standings in Eastern Maine Class B basketball.
MDI has two games remaining in the regular season – both on the road. It would need to win both those games to remain a top seeded team. On Feb. 6, it is scheduled to play at Hermon High School. On Feb. 8 MDI is scheduled to play at Ellsworth High School.
