DOVER FOXCROFT — The Mount Desert Island High School boys’ basketball team improved their chances of qualifying for Maine state competition with three wins this week against John Bapst High School, Bucksport High School, and Foxcroft Academy.

MDI began its three-game winning streak against John Bapst, demonstrating some of its most organized offense this season. The Trojans developed an early lead in the first quarter and maintained that advantage throughout the game.

However the lead never stretched beyond 10 points until early in the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter began 41-23 and ended with MDI leading with a final score of 68-34.

After focusing on maintaining defensive energy in practice, the MDI boys maintained momentum to beat Bucksport 54-39 on Saturday, Jan. 5.

During that game, MDI again pulled ahead in the first quarter to lead 17-10, with points secured for the Trojans by Jon Phelps, Ben Walls, and Andrew Davis.

The Trojans finished their winning streak with a rescheduled game against Foxcroft Academy. During that game, MDI again gained an early lead of 15-8 and maintained that advantage through the third quarter. Foxcroft redoubled its efforts in the fourth quarter to score an impressive 30 points; but MDI managed to cling to its lead and win that contest with a final score of 68-63.

The MDI boys are scheduled to play Old Town High School on Jan. 15, and Ellsworth High School on Jan 19.
