BAR HARBOR — The basketball firepower that sent the Mount Desert Island High School varsity girls’ team to the Eastern Maine Class B title last season was fully evident this week with victories in preseason exhibition play.

MDI hosts a Thanksgiving Tip-Off tournament with Ellsworth every year. In the last of four games Friday, the MDI girls got the chance for a rematch with Lake Region, their opponents in the State Class B finals back in February. This time, MDI won 55-29.

MDI ran the court well in the first quarter, racking up 18 points, including a three-pointer by Kelsey Shaw. Passing and defense were strong, led by Molly Carroll and Sarah Phelps. Big rebounds and steals came from Keely McConomy and Darcy Kanu.

In the second quarter, Ali Bierman led off the scoring when she got the rebound off an Abbe Miller shot attempt. The Laker defense improved and Trojan shooting accuracy fell for the first part of the quarter as both teams racked up fouls. With two minutes left in the quarter, MDI found their groove again. Phelps blocked several Lake Region shots, Tapley was two for two at the free throw line, and Carroll scored off a Shaw rebound and Tapley assist. Shaw added six points in the final minute. The score at the half was 32-13.

The third quarter was tough, with more foul trouble and battles for possession. Shaw and Sarah Norberg each added two points. Tapley had five in the quarter, including a three just before the buzzer.

Lake Region had their best offensive quarter in the fourth. They added 10 points to 14 by MDI. The final score was 55-29.

MDI 56 – Lincoln Academy 35

In the Lady Trojans’ first game of the day Friday, they jumped out to an early lead over Lincoln Academy and held it for a 56-35 win. Tapley led the scoring with 16 points. Shaw had 11.

Saturday, the team traveled to Bangor for another play day with games against Bangor and Thornton Academy.

“We’ve had some very good scrimmages,” Barker said. “Every player got quality minutes and made solid contributions. We’re still a work in progress – that’s as it should be. Players are still competing for roles and playing time.”

The girls’ season opener is set for Friday at 7 p.m. at home against visiting Old Town.
