BAR HARBOR — The George Stevens Academy Lady Eagles gave the Mount Desert Island High School varsity girls’ basketball team a run early in the game Saturday, but MDI pulled off their fifth regular season victory with a 62-32 win.

GSA made two three-pointers in the first few minutes and kept the lead through the first quarter, which ended with a score of 14-13.

At the pause after the first, Coach Brent Barker encouraged the team, he said, but didn’t try to fix the problem for them, he said. “They’ve got to fight through this. This is a veteran group of kids; they need to learn how to do it themselves. We have to find a way to start games quicker.”

The Trojan defense came on strong in the second quarter and allowed only three more points from GSA in the rest of the half. Offense was still a little slow at first, but in the final two minutes, MDI increased their lead from 7 points to 16. The score at halftime was 33-17.

“We talk a lot about defense,” Barker said. “That’s what wins championships – and that’s what loses championships.”

To lead off the second half, Sarah Phelps pulled down a defensive rebound and got it to Kelsey Shaw, who laid it up for two points. The Eagles called a time out.

Phelps then scored on a Molly Carroll assist.

Carroll pushed inside for a two-pointer despite being double guarded. Keely McConomy and Shaw had big steals.

The score after three quarters was 49-23.

In the fourth quarter, Haley Littlefield sank two three pointers. Sara Norberg and Julianna Cleaves each added one. Ali Bierman and Cassidy Parady battled on defense, forcing some jump balls and holding GSA to nine points in the quarter. The final score was 62-32.

“I was also really happy with our ball movement in the fourth quarter,” Barker said. “I thought our second unit did a good job. The ball switched sides of the floor. They were attacking the gaps, and there was some good high-low stuff. I’m hoping that goes forward with the whole group.”

MDI 79 – Foxcroft 39

The Trojans hosted Foxcroft Academy Thursday, Dec. 18, for a game that was rescheduled from earlier in the month. MDI won walking away, 79-39.

Shaw had 14 points in the game. Carroll had 12 and Darcy Kanu had 10.

Next up for the team is their annual winter break Aroostook County road trip. Games are set for 5 p.m., Monday, Dec. 29, in Caribou and 1 p.m. Tuesday in Presque Isle.
