BANGOR — Mount Desert Island High School basketball fans were subdued as they filed out of the Cross Center Saturday after the varsity girls’ team, fresh off an undefeated season, was eliminated in quarterfinal tournament action.

The Gardiner Tigers defeated the Lady Trojans 62-50.

“It’s a tough balance because I was very happy with the way we played throughout the year,” Coach Brent Barker said. “What these kids did going 18-0, that was a huge accomplishment for the program.”

“Then, to get knocked out in the first round of tournament play – it’s not that I’m disappointed in the kids – it’s just disappointing for everybody. We had huge goals. So not to reach those goals is gut-wrenching. But that’s part of tournament play, and that’s why we do it. Everybody’s 0-0 going into the tournament.”

Gardiner jumped out to an early 8-0 lead Saturday on the back of two three-point shots. MDI battled back to 14-13, but never took the lead. Darcy Kanu and Sierra Tapley each came up with some steals, but the team couldn’t capitalize on them. Gardiner had a 27-21 lead at the half.

MDI committed fouls and errors in the second half that allowed the Tigers to open up a large lead. Tapley fouled out at the beginning of the fourth quarter and would be followed by Kelsey Shaw and Sarah Phelps before the game was over. MDI went on a run early in the fourth as Molly Carroll, Shaw and Phelps each scored. That prompted Barker to call a time out to make a plan, but the Lady Trojans continued to struggle. The final score was 62-50.

Shaw paced MDI in the loss with 19 points, 14 rebounds and four steals. Phelps added 9 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals, and Kanu had 7 points and 5 rebounds.

“Gardiner wanted it a little more than we did,” Barker said. “They played relaxed, where we got down. We played a little tighter. We had some confusion on defense a couple times.

“I’ve had three of the seniors with me since their freshman year. They’ve put in so much time and energy, so it’s bittersweet. Hopefully, like anything else, the goal is to have [this loss] make us better people. We might not be able to see the ‘why’ right now, but later on in life, there’s this experience you can learn from,” he said.

The 2014-2015 varsity girls’ team included sophomores Abbe Miller, Darcy Kanu and Mariah Hamor, juniors Kelsey Shaw, Julianna Cleaves, Sierra Tapley, Keely McConomy and Cassidy Parady, and seniors Haley Littlefield, Sarah Phelps, Molly Carroll, Ali Bierman and Sara Norberg. Kyle Lamson, a senior, is the team manager.
