DOVER-FOXCROFT — Continuing undefeated on the season, the Mount Desert Island High School varsity girls’ basketball team defeated the Foxcroft Academy Ponies 71-38 Tuesday night.

The Lady Trojans were paced by Kelsey Shaw with 24 points. Sara Norberg started in the game and had 13 points. Sarah Phelps had 12 points including two threes.

“Everyone took advantage of their opportunities,” Coach Brent Barker said. “Our goal is to get better every day and be playing our best basketball in February.”

MDI 59 – John Bapst 44

When the John Bapst Crusaders arrived at MDI Saturday, they were 7-1 on the season. The game got off to a slow start with defensive battles, but Shaw and Sierra Tapley each had four points in the first minutes. Phelps pulled down a defensive rebound and made a baseball pass to Shaw, who sent it inside to Darcy Kanu for two. That put MDI up 10-0. By the end of the quarter, the score was 21-2.

Kanu led off the second quarter with a steal and two field goals. Phelps leapt from behind a Bapst shooter for a near-perfect deflection. Haley Littlefield and Ali Bierman pulled down rebounds. Bapst hit a three at the buzzer to put them in double digits, making the halftime score 34-12.

Norberg and Keely McConomy jumped into the battle for rebounds in the third. Bapst outscored MDI in the fourth 25-8 as the Lady Trojans’ reserves worked to hold down the fort.

“They always hold the ball, and it’s a tough defensive game for us trying not to foul on the attacks,” Shaw said. “We put in a new press, and I think it’s working well. We switch it up a lot, too.”

Shaw and Tapley each logged 17 points in the game. Kanu had 12.

MDI 54 – WA 44

MDI hosted the Washington Academy Raiders Thursday, Jan. 8 for their tenth game of the season, and came away with a 54-44 win. Shaw had a game-high 22 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Tapley added 13 points and 6 assists. Kanu and McConomy each had 6 rebounds. Kanu also led the team in steals with 4 in the game.

The Lady Trojans are set to host Hermon on Friday at 7 p.m. Then they have a full week of practice before Caribou and Presque Isle arrive the following weekend.
