BAR HARBOR — With five games to go in the regular season, the Mount Desert Island High School varsity girls’ basketball team remains undefeated.

At home Friday night, they defeated the Hermon Hawks 73-55, their 13th win of the season.

“Hermon needed a win,” MDI Coach Brent Barker said. The Hawks came in with a 4-8 record. “They’ve got some good athletes, and it was a good test for us.”

Hermon controlled the tip-off and jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. That first point for MDI came when Hermon sent Kelsey Shaw to the free throw line. Both teams had some trouble with passing, but Shaw, Sierra Tapley and Sarah Phelps each added field goals to put MDI up 14-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Tapley led off the second quarter with a long two-pointer, but the Hawks were gaining momentum. They had two threes in the quarter to outscore the Trojans and narrow their point deficit. The score at halftime was 29-25. Abbe Miller was effective on steals and guarding and Ali Bierman helped out on the boards.

Hermon sank another three at the beginning of the third quarter, bringing the score to 29-28, but MDI held onto the lead. Shaw pulled down a defensive rebound and got the ball to Sara Norberg for a two-point goal. Phelps and Tapley had threes. Molly Carroll saved a pass that was almost picked off and passed to Darcy Kanu for two. Carroll had several more steals and assists as the Trojan machine warmed up, ending the third quarter with a convincing 59-38 lead.

The Hawks added 17 more points in the fourth, enough to outscore the Trojans but not enough to dig themselves out of the hole. With a three-point goal for Hermon in the final seconds, the final score was MDI 73 – Hermon 55.

Shaw had 29 points and 15 rebounds in the game. Tapley had 21 points. Shaw had 8 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists.

“We were able to come out in the second half and dominate,” Barker said. “We’ll continue to try some new things in practice to get ready for next weekend.”

Rematches are set for this weekend at home against Caribou, Friday at 6 p.m. and Presque Isle, Saturday at 1 p.m. Both are planned as double headers with the boys’ teams.
