ELLSWORTH — For the Ellsworth Eagle girls, wins over the rival Mount Desert Island Trojans have been few and far between in recent years.
But the Eagles will go into Friday’s home game against the visiting Trojans with a momentum they’ve not had since the 2005 season.
That year, the Eagles went 14-5, playing their way into the Eastern Maine Class B tournament before losing a quarterfinal game to MDI 38-37 on a last-second three-pointer.
This season, with a 7-3 record, Ellsworth is currently ranked ninth in the Eastern Maine Class B standings and is less than four tournament points behind the sixth-ranked and 9-1 Trojans.
MDI jumped from ninth place in the standings with Monday night’s convincing 62-49 win over the Old Town Coyotes.
Also in the mix for Eastern Maine post-season play with just three weeks to go are the 7-2 Sumner Tigers, ranked sixth in Class C, and the 8-3 Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners, ranked eighth in Class D.
Neither the 3-7 George Stevens Academy Eagles, ranked 14th, nor the 1-10 Bucksport Golden Bucks, ranked 16th, are currently in Class C playoff contention.
