Chair backs boost b-ball

BAR HARBOR — The padded folding chairs used by players at basketball games in the Mount Desert Island High School gymnasium used to sport Coca-cola advertisements. But now they hold a slice of the school’s athletic history.

“Other schools do memorial chairs or advertising for local business,” said Andrew Shea, who organized the fundraiser with Athletic Director Bunky Dow. “The thought was, why don’t we do an alumni history.”

Proceeds from sponsored chairs go to the MDI varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball teams for un-budgeted expenses. The funds have given the coaches access to resources such as bringing in speakers, summer programs or team supplies.

“The chairs mostly get used for basketball, that’s what they were bought for,” Shea said, “so Mr. Dow was fine with proceeds going towards the basketball program.”

“Anyone who played varsity basketball can sponsor a chair,” Shea said. “They all follow a similar format, with the person’s class year, years on varsity, championships won, 1000 point scorers, etc.”

Some families traced back to the days before MDI High School to players from Pemetic in Southwest Harbor, Bar Harbor High School and Gilman High in Northeast Harbor. The ranks have expanded as more students play for MDI.
