BANGOR – The Mount Desert Island High School varsity boys basketball team defeated the Gardiner Tigers 57-53 in Class B quarterfinal action Saturday. Riley Swanson led MDI in scoring with 17. Aaron Snurkowski and Russell Kropff each poured in 10. The Trojans advance to the semifinals.
MDI ended the low-scoring first half with a slim 19-17 lead. Swanson cleaned up on defensive rebounds and Graham Good and Andrew Phelps had some big steals, giving MDI as much time on offense as possble. On offense, Swanson’s outside shooting and Gus Reeves and Drew Rich’s determination pushing inside, even when double-teamed, kept them in the game. The score at the half was 19-17.
Classic Trojan “playing for each other” was even more in evidence in the second half, when MDI used surprise outlet passes to keep the Gardiner defense guessing. Phelps and Good fed the ball to Kropff in two of those plays; Kropff scored 8 points in the last two minutes. The final score was 57-53.
Swanson did some on-court coaching and encouraging in difficult moments and after fouls. “They’re my classmates and my teammates,” he said, “I want the best for them.”
