Boys hit rough patch

BAR HARBOR — Losses this weekend to Caribou and Presque Isle were frustrating to the Mount Desert Island High School varsity boys’ basketball team, Coach Justin Norwood said.

“Most of these kids have not experienced the amount of losing we’ve seen,” he said. The team, overwhelmingly underclassmen, is 4-11 on the season so far. “But we’ll continue to work hard. We’re looking forward to moving forward. We’re focused on what we need to do better.” Right now, he said, that means rebounding and preventing turnovers by “taking care of the ball.”

Presque Isle 76 – MDI 67

The Trojans took the lead early when they hosted Presque Isle Saturday afternoon, the last day of a marathon two-day tournament with eight games (including JV teams) in the MDI gym. Riley Swanson scored a two and a three to put MDI up 5-1. The Trojans moved the ball well, but shooting over the bigger Wildcat defenders was a challenge. Russell Kropff added six points, assisted on one field goal by a great low-to-the-ground inside pass from Drew Rich. MDI led 15-11 after one quarter.

Gus Reeves sank a three pointer early in the second quarter. The Wildcats came back to tie and pull ahead despite some good defensive plays from Reeves, Graham Good and James O’Donnell. By halftime, Presque Isle had a 40-32 lead.

A tough battle in the third led to a 50-50 tie, but the Trojans racked up several fouls along the way. Swanson had another three, big saves and a coast-to-coast drive.

The Wildcats had all the momentum in the fourth. Good had a plus-one when he was fouled while shooting. Andrew Phelps and Swanson sank threes. But a 10-point deficit was too much to overcome in the final two minutes. The final score was 76-67.

Swanson had 18 points in the loss. Phelps had 9, and Reeves and Good each added 8.

Caribou 55 – MDI 44

Friday night against Caribou, MDI shot out to an early lead. Kropff and Rich each scored on assists by Swanson, then Rich nabbed a steal and scored again. Caribou came back to lead 13-11 after one quarter.

When the Vikings’ lead grew to 22-15 in the second, Norwood called a time out. Then Swanson scored, pulled down the next defensive rebound and got the ball to Good for two. Aaron Snurkowski sank a three from the far left. The score at the half was Caribou 24 – MDI 22.

O’Donnell added four points early in the third as MDI came back to tie 32-32. Two trips to the free throw line were all it took to bring Caribou back on top 38-35 at the end of the quarter.

The Viking defense was able to hold the Trojans to 9 points in the fourth, 7 of which came from Snurkowski. Good and O’Donnell pulled down some rebounds, but the team couldn’t capitalize on them. The final score was 55-44.

Snurkowski and O’Donnell led the scoring with 10 points each.

The Trojans are set to take on John Bapst at the Cross Center Tuesday and host Ellsworth for their final regular season game Thursday.
