OLD TOWN — Sophomore Aaron Snurkowski paced the Mount Desert Island High School varsity boys’ basketball team in their season opener Monday night on the road. Snurkowski had ten points, including two three-pointers and six turnovers. Despite that good effort, Old Town beat the Trojans 65-46.
The first half of the game was very close. Old Town controlled the tip off but missed their first several shot attempts. The first point posted was an Old Town free throw. Riley Swanson made a three-pointer for MDI on a Graham Good assist, but both teams continued to have shooting trouble. Snurkowski added a three while Good kept Coyote star Eric Hoogterp from getting to the ball. Good added his own two-pointer to bring MDI to an 8-1 lead.
Gus Reeves got a rebound and took it coast-to-coast for a layup. James O’Donnell added two on a Drew Rich assist, but Old Town was erasing their point deficit fast and pulled ahead to a 16-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Trojans began to struggle in the second quarter and racked up some costly fouls, but they put together some good plays. Good got the rebound from a missed shot by Reeves to score. Swanson got a defensive rebound up to Snurkowski, who swooshed a three-pointer. In the last minute of the half, Reeves added two to bring the score to 29-25 Old Town, still very much anyone’s game. Old Town answered with a three at the buzzer for a 32-25 lead.
The Coyotes found their groove in the second half while MDI continued to struggle. The Trojans were passing well, but in a way that was vulnerable to steals and turnovers. Snurkowski was 2 for 2 from the free throw line. O’Donnell saved a couple of plays with offensive rebounds. By the end of the third quarter, Old Town was ahead 47-31.
The Trojans weren’t giving up, though. They forced two jump balls in the fourth quarter. Swanson added a three, and O’Donnell got a plus-one when an Old Town defender was called for a hold while O’Donnell was shooting. In the final minutes of the game, Andrew Phelps contributed six points, three steals, a rebound and an assist. Aaron Boumil made the final two-pointer for MDI. The final score was 65-46 Old Town.
Swanson was second in scoring with nine points including three three-pointers, two rebounds and two assists. O’Donnell and Reeves each had four rebounds.
“There were stretches where I thought we played very, very well,” Coach Justin Norwood said. “We have some work to do on turnovers and rebounding.”
The boys are set to host Hermon Saturday afternoon at 3:30.
