BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity boys’ basketball team continued to gain momentum with a Monday night 69-39 victory over the John Bapst Crusaders.

The win puts them at 4-6 on the season and twelfth seed. But they’ve won four of their last five games.

The Trojans jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the first quarter on three-pointers by Drew Rich and Riley Swanson and quick work on the boards by Russell Kropf.

MDI demonstrated growing ability to work together on both ends of the court. James O’Donnell scored on a Jake Boumil assist. A great team play that began with a steal by Rich saw several offensive rebounds before Kropf made the two-point shot. On defense, Gus Reeves was so effective guarding that Bapst began to set up screens to stop him, defending against defense.

The score at halftime was a ten-point lead for MDI, 28-18.

At the top of the third quarter, Graham Good pulled down a defensive rebound and got the ball to Aaron Snurkowski, who assisted Swanson for a three. Good made his own shot. Rich added a three, a steal and a rebound. Reeves scored on a Snurkowski assist and Boumil added two in the final seconds. The score was 45-26.

The Crusaders sent MDI to the free throw line many times in the fourth as they passed the ten-foul mark. O’Donnell was a strong presence in the post with blocks and rebounds. Devin Parlatore had a dramatic steal, missed a shot, got his own rebound and sent the ball out to Andrew Phelps for a three in the final 90 seconds. The final score was 69-39.

“That was a team victory for sure. We do have young players, but we have good players, and they’re getting better,” Coach Justin Norwood said. “I can’t imagine anyone wants to play us at this point, as long as we keep improving.”

MDI 78 – Foxcroft Academy 63

On Jan. 14, the team traveled to Dover-Foxcroft for a second game with the Foxcroft Academy Ponies. The game was close through the first three quarters, with MDI up 36-35 at halftime, but the Trojans pulled ahead to win 78-63. Swanson led the team in scoring with 21 points including six three-point goals. Snurkowski had 16 points and Kropf had 10.

The boys head to Washington Academy for a rematch with the tough Class C team Friday at 7 p.m., then to Hermon Monday night.
