Trojans beat Eagles, split with PI

ELLSWORTH — In their first win of the league season, the Mount Desert Island High School varsity baseball team defeated the Ellsworth Eagles 5-0 on Thursday, May 1. Senior Thomas Paola pitched a complete game shut-out for the Trojans, a three-hitter with no walks.

MDI bats were working better than they have yet, against formidable Ellsworth pitcher Conor Maguire. Maguire was 2014 Player of the Year in the league. The Trojans’ first run came in the fourth inning. Ellsworth had runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the fourth, but Paola struck out two and Cordell Soper at first caught a fly ball to end the inning and protect their lead.

Jacob Mitchell led off the seventh inning with a strong double to left field. Riley Swanson, Paola and Seth Young followed with solid hits bringing in two runs. Dylan Collin bunted to bring in Paola for the third run of the inning. The final score was 7-0.

“We hit great today,” MDI Coach Mike Swanson said. “We made some really good plays in the outfield, too.” Jack Sasner robbed Maguire of a hit in the sixth with a catch deep in center field. “He dove and caught it over his head. It was a hell of a catch,” the coach said.

Presque Isle

The MDI baseball team split a double-header Saturday with Presque Isle.

MDI won the first game 2-1 in a pitcher’s duel that had Young throwing a two-hit shutout into the sixth inning.

Young, who pitched a complete game, allowed one run on four hits and struck-out 11 batters.

Young also proved valuable in the batter’s box, driving in a run to give MDI a 1-0 lead. Presque Isle tied the game in the sixth.

Young then retired the first three Wildcat batters he faced, sending the tie game to the bottom of the seventh. MDI’s Nick Stanley, Paola and Young each hit to load the bases. A hard shot by Collin bounced off the third baseman’s glove, allowing Stanley to score the winning run.

In the second game, Presque Isle scored seven runs in the third and fourth innings to top the Trojans 8-3.

The Trojan’s three runs were scored in the third inning on errors by the Wildcats. With bases loaded, Sandy Henggeler hit a grounder to the Wildcat shortstop, who overthrew the catcher, allowing two runners to score. With runners on second and third, Paola hit a fly to right field, which was caught but misplayed, allowing the third run.

Seth Clark and Paola each had two hits in the contest. Young, Collin and Sasner had one hit apiece.
