BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity baseball team is 2-3 on the preseason as the young team gets up to speed. On Monday, the first day of spring break, the Trojans fell to the Nokomis Warriors 13-9 at home. Seth Young, Seth Clark, Dylan Collin and Thomas Paola all got time on the pitcher’s mound in that game.

“We have a young infield,” Coach Mike Swanson said, “so we’re still making some mental mistakes. They’ll come up to speed fast, I think, because they’re all good athletes.

“We need to work on not walking batters. For some reason, when we’re throwing strikes, the rest of the defense is also on their toes. When batters walk, then we get back on our heels and commit more errors.”

Younger pitchers on the team need to develop strategy, he said. Often in these preseason games, they’d throw two strikes and still walk batters.

Ellsworth 7 – MDI 2

The Trojans hosted Ellsworth Saturday in the last game of a round-robin play day. Geoffrey Hanscom pitched four innings. In the first, the Eagles hit two fly balls and one struck out. Hanscom allowed one run in the second and struck out two. After four innings, the score was 4-2, and freshman Stanley Grierson took over on the mound.

Grierson also led the batting lineup and got MDI’s one run in the first, batted in by Jacob Mitchell. In the second, Young was batted in by Clark for the team’s only other run of the game.

Mattanawcook 3 – MDI 2

Senior Paola struck out five and allowed two hits and no runs in the first three innings Saturday morning against Mattanawcook. The score was 0-0 when freshman Matt Perconti came in to pitch in the fourth. The first runner got to first on an error, the next walked, and the next hit a single. Perconti struck out the fourth with the bases loaded, but allowed three runs in the inning. MDI answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, both batted in by a Riley Swanson single. The final score was 3-2.

MDI 14 – Orono 7

MDI did notch two wins last week at the University of Maine’s Mahaney Diamond against Orono. Friday’s game was a 14-7 Trojan victory, with pitching from Young, Clark and Swanson.

Senior Jack Sasner led the batting rotation and had three hits, three runs scored and 3 RBI. The MDI offense was helped by 10 walks, two batters hit by pitches and three Orono errors. Stanley had two runs scored and an RBI on his one hit. Swanson had two hits and three RBI. Matt Lambert and Ezra Johnson each scored twice.

MDI 9 – Orono 2

The team’s first preseason game Thursday showed off pitching talent, with no runs for Orono until with seventh inning. Paola gave up only one hit in three innings and Perconti allowed no hits in three innings. Collin came in at the end of the game, and the Red Riots got two runs.

Sasner led the offense with two hits, including a triple, and three runs. Young, Swanson and Collin each had one RBI.

The Trojans are set to play the George Stevens Academy Eagles for their season opener today, (Thursday) at 4:30 p.m. in Blue Hill.

Saturday, they host the Foxcroft Academy Ponies for a double header beginning at noon.
