BAR HARBOR — Teams from across Maine traveled to Mount Desert Island this weekend to compete in the annual Marty Lyons Baseball Classic tournament.
The 17th edition of the event was hosted by the Acadian Youth Sports Program. It began Friday afternoon, with a total of 20 teams playing 34 games.
The major league (ages 11-12) winner was the team from Hermon. The minor league ( ages 9-10) champions were from Old Town.
Dozens of volunteers took over the tasks of keeping score books, handling pitch counters and even the snack shack on all three days.
“We had a huge crew of very dedicated and giving volunteers,” said AYS Executive Director Kyle McKim. “People gave up their entire weekend to help these kids play baseball.”
The Acadian All-Star teams in the minor and major league division were part of the tournament along with the Mount Desert Island Falcons.
The Acadian major leaguers won their first game against Presque Isle and then lost to Caribou 9-8 on Sunday. The team went on to beat the other team from Caribou, followed by a 7-5 victory over Old Town. Their final victory was against Brewer-Orrington with an 8th-inning comeback from A.J. Lozano.
His line drive to center sent the team to their final game, in which they were outmatched by Hermon 11-7.
Lozano was named the most valuable player in his team’s winning game against Brewer-Orrington.
