Baseball team splits the week

HERMON — Pitcher Dylan Collin of the Mount Desert Island High School baseball team allowed no hits into the fifth inning of a game with Hermon Tuesday, but the Hawks won the game 2-1. Collin allowed only four base hits, and both Hermon runs were unearned.

The only run for the Trojans came in the third inning when Seth Young hit a ground ball to second, scoring Jack Sasner from third.

Caribou 6 – MDI 5

The Trojans split a doubleheader with the Caribou Vikings on their road trip north Saturday.

Caribou won the first game by one run. “We fell behind on some early errors and missed opportunities, MDI Coach Mike Swanson said. “But the kids didn’t quit. We scored three runs in the seventh inning and had the bases loaded.”

Young pitched three innings and Matt Perconti took over for three.

MDI 9 – Caribou 6

Thomas Paola was the starting pitcher for MDI in the second game. Stanley Grierson came in for the fourth and part of the fifth inning.

MDI logged seven runs in the first two innings, but Caribou caught up to tie the game on Grierson’s watch, and Paola came back to close out the game. Riley Swanson drove in two big runs in the top of the sixth to put the Trojans back on top.

“Our offense is doing really well,” the coach said, “19 hits in the double header and only five strikeouts.” He said the team’s strengths and weaknesses are the opposite from recent seasons when they relied on strong pitching and defense. “We have six kids hitting .300 or better, but we’re walking too many and missing plays in the field.”

MDI 13 – Bapst 1

The Trojans hosted John Bapst on Wednesday, May 6. In the complete game victory, pitcher Collin struck out five and allowed only six base runners. The one Bapst run was unearned.

On offense, MDI had ten hits in the game. Grierson and Nick Stanley had the hits that got the Trojans off to the 2-0 lead in the first. Seven more runs in the third came from Sasner’s three-run double and RBI hits by Grierson and Swanson. Jacob Mitchell, Cordell Soper, Young and Perconti each knocked in runs in the bottom of the fourth for the team’s highest run total of the season.

The Trojans are set to host Hermon for a rematch Tuesday, May 19, at 4:30 p.m.
