BAR HARBOR — The Acadian All-Star baseball season is underway on Mount Desert Island.
The teams include 9/10 and 11/12 softball and baseball. All four teams are currently competing in their regional tournaments.
Both girls’ softball teams face only one opponent, Ellsworth, for their tournaments. In 11/12 all star action, the two teams played a best of three series last week. Ellsworth took two games, winning 13-8 in Bar Harbor and 5-2 on their home field, making the third unnecessary.
The 9/10 tournament will begin this weekend, with the first game taking place Friday evening at the Bar Harbor ball fields.
The 9/10 minor baseball team started their tournament with a loss to Machias 11-2. They bounced back the following week with a victory against Calais, scoring 22 runs to Calais’ 12 on July 3.
The 11/12 baseball team won their first game of the tournament with a bang, beating rival Ellsworth 8-6 in a 10-inning bout. The game went back and forth for five innings due to stellar pitching on both sides, as well as three home runs from the Acadian’s Sam Mitchell and Ellsworth’s Jackson Curtis and Hunter Curtis.
After six, the score was still knotted up, forcing extra innings. Brady Renault took the mound to pitch the final four innings, holding Ellsworth scoreless. Renault then proved he was not a one-trick pony, scoring the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning.
Jack DaCorte then scored the final run, making the score 8-6. Porter Isaacs finished the game on the mound for the Acadians, giving up no more runs.
Championship play will continue throughout the month of July. The winners of the District 1 tournaments will represent the region at the state championship tournaments, held annually in Waldoboro.
