    The Mount Desert Island baseball and softball teams both improved to 4-2 on the season with a pair of key road victories in recent contests. The MDI baseball team bounced back from defeats last Tuesday against Bucksport and Saturday against Old Town with wins last Thursday against Brewer and Tuesday against George Stevens Academy. On the softball diamond, the Trojans won back-to-back games with wins over Brewer and GSA on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

    After a long wait, opening day for the Mount Desert Island baseball team was twice as nice — in more ways than one. Between offensive firepower, solid pitching and good defense, MDI put it all together Saturday in the team’s season-opening doubleheader against Presque Isle. The Trojans defeated the visiting Wildcats 9-4 in Game 1 and claimed an 11-0 win via the mercy rule in Game 2 to complete a sweep of both contests and start the year 2-0.

    For a coach two years removed from his last baseball game, Andy Pooler feels he — and his squad — are in a good spot. Nothing is easy for anyone in the high school sports world these days as coaches and players look to get up to speed following a lost season. Yet even with an everchanging list of obstacles and uncertainties, Mount Desert Island’s head coach can’t help but be optimistic.
